Finally Sitting Comfortably after Spinal Surgery

How Somatic Movement Education helped Denise “Feel Amazing”

Many of my students are stiff and sore from sitting down at work all day.  Given that human bodies were designed for movement, it’s no surprise so many of these professionals suffer from neck pain, shoulder pain, or back pain.

Most of these women know they need more movement, so they start with a well intentioned plan to exercise more.  Along the way, they make some of the same mistakes I did.

Our stories are remarkably similar:

  • Going from doctor to doctor without finding any relief,
  • Trying multiple therapies only to be disappointed,
  • Feeling hopeless after so many sleepless nights,
  • Wondering how to keep performing when so distracted by pain.

Fortunately, Somatic Movement Education offers a solution.  It works from the inside out by teaching you how to better organize your movement.  That’s why I attract so many psychotherapists - they really understand that deep work can be slow, subtle, and amazingly powerful.

Denise and I met when we rented space in the same building.  She had read Feldenkrais’s work and thought, “Oh, this is a lot like Gestalt Therapy.”  (Feldenkrais inspired the various people with whom I have trained.) A fan of this style of learning through movement, Denise had joined my group lessons periodically.

Two months after having spinal surgery, Denise thought she might try a series of hands-on lessons on my table.  Denise was astounded by the results: she found herself sitting comfortably, with one leg bent, her foot on the chair and her knee hugged to her chest, while chatting with a friend.  A favorite way of hers to sit, it had not been accessible to her for many, many months prior.

Denise’s Google Review of Move and Bloom speaks for itself:

“I have thoroughly enjoyed Ana Maria's [Somatic Movement Education] classes. The movements are subtle and slow, yet after a class I feel a profound improvement in how I feel in my body. Just months after spinal surgery Ana Maria suggested I pause in my rehab - no massage, no PT, no chiropractic - and come to her for 4 consecutive sessions on the table. Again, the work was so subtle that I could not imagine how this would help my pain. But after one week I felt amazing. What happens in her classes and on her table is hard to describe but I have witnessed the. deep impact of her her work. I highly recommend Ana Maria and NeuroMovement!”

While every student's story is different, all of them end with some kind of positive change.  Somatic Movement Education helps people feel better.  To find out what this work might have to offer you, schedule a call.  I would love to hear your story and see if we’re a good fit.
